Steam Cleaning vs Dry Cleaning Carpets

February 15, 2026

Steam cleaning or dry cleaning? Compare the two most popular carpet cleaning methods. Learn which is best for your carpets and when to use each.

Steam Cleaning vs Dry Cleaning Carpets

When researching professional carpet cleaning, you will encounter two main methods: steam cleaning (hot water extraction) and dry cleaning. Both claim to deliver clean carpets, but they work very differently and produce different results. Here is an honest comparison to help you understand which method is right for your situation.

What Is Steam Cleaning (Hot Water Extraction)?

"Steam cleaning" is actually a misnomer. The process is technically hot water extraction (HWE). A cleaning solution is applied to the carpet, allowed to break down soil and stains, then hot water is injected at high pressure into the carpet fibres. A powerful vacuum extracts the water along with the dissolved soil, leaving the carpet deep-cleaned.

The key advantage of hot water extraction is penetration depth. The water reaches the full depth of carpet fibres and the backing, flushing out embedded grit, allergens, bacteria, and organic matter that dry methods cannot touch.

Drying time for hot water extraction is typically 4-8 hours with professional truck-mounted equipment. Rental machines take 12-24 hours because their suction is much weaker, leaving more water in the carpet.

What Is Dry Carpet Cleaning?

Dry carpet cleaning uses minimal moisture, usually a compound powder, foam, or encapsulation chemical applied to the carpet. The compound absorbs or encapsulates soil particles, which are then removed by vacuuming. Some dry methods use a small amount of cleaning solution applied by a rotary pad machine.

The primary advantage of dry cleaning is fast drying time, 30 minutes to 2 hours. This makes it popular for commercial settings that cannot afford extended downtime. The carpet is ready to use almost immediately after cleaning.

Head-to-Head Comparison

  • Effectiveness: Hot water extraction wins. It removes more total soil, bacteria, allergens, and embedded grit. Dry methods excel at surface cleaning but cannot penetrate backing layers.
  • Drying time: Dry cleaning wins. Ready in 30-120 minutes vs 4-8 hours for professional HWE. For rental HWE machines, drying takes 12-24 hours: significantly worse than dry cleaning.
  • Cost: Roughly comparable for professional services. Dry cleaning may cost slightly more due to proprietary compounds.
  • Allergen removal: Hot water extraction wins significantly. Flushing with water removes allergens physically; encapsulation methods only capture them at the surface level.
  • Manufacturer recommendations: Most major carpet manufacturers (Shaw, Mohawk, Stainmaster) specify hot water extraction as their recommended or required cleaning method to maintain warranty.

Which Method We Use and Why

We use hot water extraction exclusively. It is the most effective method for removing embedded soil and allergens, it is recommended by carpet manufacturers, and our professional truck-mounted equipment delivers drying times of 8-12 hours, and running fans or opening windows helps them dry sooner.

For Alberta homes dealing with winter salt, pet dander, and Calgary's chinook mud cycles, surface-only cleaning methods simply do not deliver adequate results. You need deep extraction to maintain healthy indoor air quality.

When Dry Cleaning Makes Sense

Dry cleaning is well-suited for: commercial offices that need carpets cleaned overnight and available by morning, areas that cannot be closed for drying, and maintenance cleaning between deep cleans. If you run a Calgary retail business or office and need quick turnaround cleaning, dry methods are worth considering for in-between cleans.
